Dolmabahce Palace

Dolmabahce Palace commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid I was constructed between 1842-56 and is the largest palace in Turkey. After Topkapi Palace, It housed Sultans for the remainder of the Ottoman Empire's rule. Which was built to compete with the grandest palaces of Europe. Located in Besiktas, Dolmabahce palace was originally a bay where the Ottoman sea captain pashas (admirals) anchored their ships. It was later converted to Has Bahce (a private garden of the Sultan) before later construction of the site into what is now known as Dolmabahce Palace. Dolmabahce Palace features architectural influences from the Baroque, Rocco and Neoclassical styles, which merge with traditional Ottoman architecture. Visitors will see the extensive use of gold and crystal, which has been used as decoration throughout the palace.
